Portsmouth is an ethnically diverse city and its long association with the Royal Navy means that many people from the British Isles, particularly Scots, Northern Irish and English from the Industrial North East have set up home in the city. The majority of the population is white (91.4%), followed by an Asian population of 3.6%. black or black British residents make up 1.2% of the population.
