Glasgow is Scotland’s biggest city, and the fourth biggest in the UK. It is also the most populated city in Scotland. Located directly alongside the River Clyde, Glasgow has a superb
trading past and burgeoning industries such as engineering, finances, manufacturing, services and business.
The Greater Glasgow area has a population of around 2.3 million. The city has worked hard to change its ‘hard man’ image and is now Scotland’s capital of culture, home to the Glasgow School of Art, Charles Rennie MacKintosh, and national orchestra, ballet and opera, among others. It has seen significant investment and economic growth, which have led today to a thriving, friendly and tourist welcoming city. These things combine to create a great opportunity to advertise in Glasgow.
Advertise to Students
The city is home to two leading universities – the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde. There is also Glasgow Caledonian University, the University of the West of Scotland and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Of a city based population of 595,000, there are 45,000 students, many of whom live in the vibrant and desirable area of the West End and easily targeted with bus shelters advertisements; a borough marked by its attractive tenement buildings and boutique shops, restaurants and cafes.
Sporting
The city has hosted the Commonwealth Games 2014. This brought thousands of tourists to the city and provided ample opportunities to advertise in Glasgow. The city is also incredibly popular for its football, with two leading teams – Rangers and Celtic, and is well known for sailing, rugby and skiing.
Diversity
Thanks to its past as a trading hub, Glasgow has a fantastically diverse advertising population – with many people attracted recently by economic growth opportunities, alongside a healthy local population group. There are distinct groups of Lithuanians, Italians, Scottish Asians – including Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, and a large Chinese community. Today, around 15pc of the city is represented by ethnic minorities, including Asian, Black African or Caribbean and Arab. There is also a large Polish population. Each group has brought its own distinct cultures, shopping experiences, entertainment and other value to the city, which is hugely vibrant, colourful and diverse as a result.
Tourists
Tourists come to Glasgow to enjoy its incredible culture, entertainment and shopping. Key attractions include the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The city has a great range of visual arts and performance venues, theatres, music venues, cinemas and museums – including the city’s Science Centre and the Kelvingrove museum. Art lovers head to the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art, and the Provand’s Lordship and Cathedral are also key attractions. In total, the city has 35 art galleries and museums, many of which are free. As well as culture, there is excellent shopping – including big names and high street chains, as well independent stores, designer outlets and chic boutiques. Key destinations include Merchant City, Princes Square and Buchanan Galleries.
For those who love the great outdoors, Bute and Arran islands are popular choices, via Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, which are close and easy to get to.
Transport advertising
The city is very easy to get around, with its own underground rail system, overground trains, comprehensive motorway and ring road network, trams and buses. There are also two airports – Glasgow International and Glasgow Prestwick, as well as a seaplane terminal. Glasgow city centre is so amply served with good public transport, that many choose to park and ride or leave their cars at home for work – in common with many primary cities. To reach those who prefer to drive, there are plenty of roadside advertising spaces and billboards via the main city approaches.
